We would be told to always be in the present moment, to forget the past, and to stop thinking about the future.

Oftentimes, we would be told to always be in the present moment, to forget the past, and to stop thinking about the future.
In a sense, they are right. The past brings regret, and the future brings worry. But on the other hand, we still need to think about the past and the future.
After all, we get to learn from our past, and we can use the lessons from history to never repeat the same mistake. We can become better people by the lessons we learn. The key is to accept what was past, to forgive those who should be forgiven, and to detach from those that causes us anguish. In doing so, our past becomes a clear guide for ourselves and for others.
We too need to think of our future. He who fails to plan, plans to fail. Being proactive ensures our actions in the present will bear favourable results in both present and future. Worry is helplessness. We have to understand the core of our worry and ask "how to I solve the problem?". Imagine driving down the road at a high speed, and then realizing your brakes don't work, and that you might hit a wall and crash at some point. What do you do? If you realize there's no other way to stop your car, you will have to slow it down, and perhaps, due to not having any choice, hit the side of the car on impact barriers to slow it down to a halt and then call for assistance. Worry is fruitless if you do not find a solution to the problem.
At the same token, living in the present is immersing yourself completely in the present. Remember that everything has its own time and place. Do not bring work home. Spend more time with family, and maintain balance in life.
Keep a positive outlook by seeing the good in everyone, in everything.
How you see things will change how you react to things, and how you react to things will bear new outcomes and consequences to your future.
