What is the meaning of the sacred syllable ॐ, OM?
According to the Māṇḍukya Upaniṣad, ॐ means all of reality on all levels. This is represented by the three syllables A + U + M:
1) A - The waking state, the physical / outer universe.
2) U - The dream state, the mental / inner universe.
3) M - The deep sleep state, where nothing is experienced.
4) The Ardhacandra (half-moon) with bindu (dot) represents your natural state which is beyond and behind the above states:
"Neither conscious inwardly nor conscious outwardly,
nor conscious towards both (inwardly and outwardly),
neither conscious nor unconscious,
not anything one can look at
not anything one can do something with or grasp at,
free from descriptions,
not to be thought about,
the essence of simple self-perception
the complete relaxation of all appearances,
this they deem to be the peaceful fourth (state) ---
this is self-reality (Atma),
this is to be realised."

नान्तःप्रज्ञं न बहिष्प्रज्ञं नोभयतःप्रज्ञं न प्रज्ञं नाप्रज्ञम् ।
अदृष्टमव्यवहार्यमग्राह्यमलक्षणमचिन्त्यमेकात्मप्रत्ययसारं
प्रपञ्चोपशमं शान्तं चतुर्थं मन्यन्ते स आत्मा स विज्ञेयः ।।
अदृष्टमव्यवहार्यमग्राह्यमलक्षणमचिन्त्यमेकात्मप्रत्ययसारं
प्रपञ्चोपशमं शान्तं चतुर्थं मन्यन्ते स आत्मा स विज्ञेयः ।।
जिसकी न अन्तःविषयक प्रज्ञा, न बहिःविषयक प्रज्ञा और न उभयविषयक प्रज्ञा है; जो न प्रज्ञ है और न अप्रज्ञ है; उस तुरीय तत्त्व को अदृष्ट, व्यवहार के अयोग्य, ग्रहण के अयोग्य, लक्षण से रहित, अचिन्त्य, आत्मप्रतीति का सार, प्रपञ्च का उपशम स्वरूप और शान्त माना जाता है, वही आत्मा है और वही जानने योग्य है॥
