Worship of the ShivaLingam is considered the prime worship for the devotees of Lord shiva.


Worship of the ShivaLingam is considered the prime worship for the devotees of Lord shiva. Worship of all other forms is considered secondary. Shivlingam is the resplendent light form of Shiva. It represents the real nature of Shiva, formless essentially and taking various forms as It wills. This jyoti swarupa of Shiva exist in twelve jyotirlingas where It is in a splendid form. Puranas talk about the glory of these abodes. There is a sanskrit shloka in Shiva Maha Purana that lists the twelve jyotirlinga temples.
"Saurashtre Somanatham Cha Srisaile Mallikarjunam.
Ujjayinyam Mahakalam Omkarama maleswaram.
Paralyam Vaidyanatham cha Dakinyam Bheema Shankaram.
Setu Bandhe tu Ramesam, Nagesam Darukavane.
Varanasyan tu Vishwesam Tryambakam Gautameethate.
Himalaye tu Kedaaram, Ghrishnesam cha shivaalaye.
Etani jyotirlingani, Saayam Praatah Patennarah.
Sapta Janma Kritam papam, Smaranena Vinashyati."
Mahadev incorporates in Himself, the aura and the holiness of all the twelve JyotirLingas. Those who chant the Dwadasa JyotirLinga Stotram will attain salvation and enlightenment and be released from this cycle of human existence with all its travails. This is mentioned in Shiva Maha Purana. By worshipping the Jyotirlingas one would be freed from all difficulties. By eating the Prasadam from these places one would be rid of all the sins. The 12 Jyotirlingas are spread out like this ; Two on the sea shore, three on river banks, four in the heights of the mountains and three in villages located in meadows.

8- Tryambakeshwar Jyotirling In Nasik (Mah)
9- Rameshwar Jyotirling In Setubandanam / Rameshwaram (T.N.)
10- Bhimashankar Jyotirling In Dakini (Mah)
11- Visweshwar Jyotirling (Kashi Vishwanath) in Varanasi (U.P.)
12- Ghrishneshwar Jyotirling In Devasrovar (Mah).
