Lord Ayyappa came into existence during a period when there the PRA tide of recorded history was little not popular. There was one official written version and that was not shared with others - due to the privalent illiteracy and also due to the crude castism.
And folklore, legends and mythologies were given a lot more popularity - something that has become the fad today now.
It's folklore and legends that created multiple mythology.
Then there were lots of calamities that destroyed historical records.
There is a story how the present idol came into existence :
The original idol was of Dharma Shasta. And even after the creation of Lord Ayyappa, the idol wasn't changed. Then once, a member of the Pandalam Family arrived and Lord Ayyappa got up to receive him out of respect. And he was then frozen in position. And later took the present position. This is something that I can't believe, because as per records, a member of the Pandalam Family had always visited the shrine every year during the Makara Sankranthi period. And he had always stood in front of the idol every year. So why didn't the Lord change His position for a long time.
Lots of records have been lost, mostly due to the vagaries of nature, and also due to carelessness or fire.
And so the mythologies and folklore has become more popular then history. And religion has become more important than God and Faith.
As it is the real story of Sri Mannikandan is by itself a great one. And there is no reason for false make-believe required for inducing faith in the Lord. But when you don't know anything about the Lord, and the faithful keep asking the Guru Swamys for answers, they make just make up one and it gets circulated and then become popular, and more popular than the facts and history.
