Lord Shiva is very easily pleased. He is known to grant boons to his devotees frequently, even if they happen to be some really wicked ones. That's why He is called Bholenath, the innocent one, because he is pure at heart and easy to please. Which means, if you love him and worship him, and even if you have some defects and weaknesses, you can be sure of his love and compassion.
Shiva is Ashutosh. You just take his name out of love, hatred or even anger, he will be very quick to respond. That's why Lord Shiva is the most worshipped God. You don't at all need any rituals or rules to follow if you worship him. Offer anything with love and he will bless you.
Shiva is most commonly worshipped as Lingam because Shiva is originator of all things. The lingam is seed and whatever we see, it is just a tree from that seed. The whole world is identical with lingam and everything is found on the lingam. All gods are situated in lingam. Thus worship of shivling is highly auspicious.
Lord Shiva is so merciful that he never punishes his devotees. All these reasons are more than enough to get devotees flock to the door steps of Shiva Mandir. He has immense powers. He destroys our suffering, the poison of human life, and removes from us impurities such as ignorance, egoism, delusion, attachment and pride to facilitate our spiritual growth.
Shiva, the giver of knowledge, is also the lord of the animals. He has great love and compassion for all animals. He protects them from disease, death and destruction. Hence he is known as Pashupatinath. Which means if you love animals and you want them to be protected from cruelty and treated well, you should worship none other than Shiva and request him to give them a better birth in their next lives.!
