Shiva is formless, limitless, transcendent and unchanging absolute Brahman, and the primal Atman (soul, self) of the universe. Shiva has many benevolent and fearsome depictions. He is depicted as an omniscient Yogi who lives an ascetic life on Mount Kailash. And He is often depicted slaying demons in his fierce aspect. Shiva is also known as Adiyogi Shiva regarded as the patron of yoga, meditation and arts. Shiva has the most significant place in the world of music and dance. As Shiva holds damaru and plays beats of life and death, hence his name is Damarudhari. As Natraja he dances cosmic dance. He is said to have invented the first five of six main Raags. Of his five faces, the eastern face gave birth to Raag Bhairav, the western face to Raag Hindol, northern to Raag Megh, sourthern face to Raag Deepak and the fifth face which is directed towards sky gave birth to Raag Shree. Goddess Parvati created Raag Kaushik. Shiva also created Rudraveena, string instrument, inspired by a form of his wife Parvati.
The names Nartaka (dancer) and Nityanarta (eternal dancer) appear in the Shiva Sahasranama. His association with dance and music is prominent in the Puranic period. Dakshinamurthy literally describes a form of Shiva in his aspect as a teacher of yoga, music, and wisdom and giving exposition on the shastras. Many important ancient stone sculpture are the earliest known representations of Shiva as Lord of Music. With his lower two arms he plays a Veena. This aspect of Shiva is benevolent; he is bejewelled and smiles gently as he plays his divine music. Nevertheless, he still holds his trident, grasps a cobra in his hand, and his hair is in arranged in matted dreadlocks. Thus, Shiva embodies the contradictory personalities of peaceful musician, fearsome warrior, and ascetic (yogi) who transcends the bounds of societal norms! ✨ππππππππΈπΌπΏπ±πΆπ·
