Forth Incarnation of Shri Vishnu is Shri Narasimha Dev Ji , who is half lion half human. The angry god had broken demon Hiranyakashipu’s neck like a twig and clawed his stomach and wore his intestines as a garland, screaming in extreme delight. And, this was all because the demon king had forbidden his son Prahlad from worshipping Shri Vishnu and was trying to murder the devout boy. When Narasimha dev ji killed the demon, he couldn’t control his own wrath and like an unstoppable beast kept destroying the universe until gods who feared him prayed to Lord Shiva to intervene and stop the mess. What happened next was a fight never seen before. Shiva took the form of Sharabha, an eight-legged beast, with two heads. They fought for hours until Narasimha Dev Ji was defeated.
Sharabha is a part-lion and part-bird beast who, according to Sanskrit literature, is eight-legged and more powerful than a lion or an elephant, possessing the ability to clear a valley in one jump. In Atharva Veda and Shiva Maha Purana it is stated that Shiva Assumed the Avatar of Sharabha to pacify Narasimha Dev Ji, avatar of Shri Vishnu. Shiva Puranas account ends with Sharabha disappearing after defeating Narasimha. This form is popularly known as Sharabeshwara or Sharabeshwaramurti. The Vaishnavas refute the portrayal of Narasimha as being destroyed by Sharabha and regard Sharabha as a name of Shri Vishnu. According to Srimad Bhagavatam and Vishnu Purana, after killing Hiranyakashipu, lord Narasimha was furious and was pacified only when Prahlad touched his feet. Likewise no mention has been found in Narasimha Puarana or other Vaishnavite scriptures of lord Shivas avatar or Narasimhas destruction by Sharabha.!
