Sharabha is a part-lion and part-bird beast who, according to Sanskrit literature, is eight-legged and more powerful than a lion or an elephant, possessing the ability to clear a valley in one jump. In Atharva Veda and Shiva Maha Purana it is stated that Shiva Assumed the Avatar of Sharabha to pacify Narasimha Dev Ji, avatar of Shri Vishnu. Shiva Puranas account ends with Sharabha disappearing after defeating Narasimha. This form is popularly known as Sharabeshwara or Sharabeshwaramurti. The Vaishnavas refute the portrayal of Narasimha as being destroyed by Sharabha and regard Sharabha as a name of Shri Vishnu. According to Srimad Bhagavatam and Vishnu Purana, after killing Hiranyakashipu, lord Narasimha was furious and was pacified only when Prahlad touched his feet. Likewise no mention has been found in Narasimha Puarana or other Vaishnavite scriptures of lord Shivas avatar or Narasimhas destruction by Sharabha.!
