Pradosham literally means Removal of Sins. It falls on the 13th lunar day (Trayodashi) during the waxing and waning phase of moon in the Hindu lunar calendar. Among the poojas performed by the devotees of Lord Shiva, the Pradosha puja is considered to be very auspicious. It is believed that during Pradosha period, all the universal beings and Gods come down to earth and attend Shiva's worship. The importance of observing Pradosha is described in ''Pradosha Mahatmyam'' from the Shiva Purana and the Skanda Puranas. Pradosha indicates the meeting of the Sun and the Moon in a horizontal line during their movement on their Axis. Pradosh Fast is observed on Trayodashi of every Moon month in both Krishna and Shukla Paksha. Normally, the period between sunset and starting of night is considered as Pradosh Kaal [ 2 hours 24 minutes, after sunset is known as Pradosha time]. It changes according to different regions. Of all the pradoshas, Shani Pradosh and Soma Pradosh are considered to be important. Sani Pradosham is the Pradosha Vrata falling on Saturday. According to Hindu belief, Lord Shiva swallowed the poison-Halahal on a Saturday [after the 'Samudra Manthan'] and this is called Sani Pradosha. Shani Pradosham is classified into Uttama Shani Pradhosham, Madhyama Shani Pradhosham, and Adama Shani Pradhosham. Soma Pradosh is observed when Pradosha falls on a Monday. Maha Pradhosh is the Pradosha which falls before Maha Sivarathri in the month of Maagha [Feb-Mar] and is the greatest of all the Pradoshas. The Lord of Trayodashi Tithi is Kaama Deva whereas the Lord of the succeeding Tithi i.e. 14th day- Chaturdashi is Lord Rudra (Shiva) himself. The 14th day of the dark half of every month – is called Sivaratri or Masa – sivaratri.

The time between 4.30 pm to 6.00 pm on Trayodashi is propitious to pray to Lord Shiva and invoke his blessings. It is believed that worshipping Lord Shiva at Pradosh day will relieve one from sins and gives Moksha.
Pradosham times are the windows of opportunity to remove karma or karmic energies that limit our potential in this current life. It is the time that Lord Shiva-Bholenath is in a blissful and generous mood, will grant boons and absorb the karma from people.

There are five types of Pradosh:

1. NITYA Pradosh- The evening time on all days, between just 3 ghatis (72 minutes) before sunset and the time when the stars rise or become visible in the sky.
2. Paksha Pradosh- Sandhya (evening) time of Shukla Paksha Chaturthi (4th Lunar day after New Moon) every month.
3. Maasa Pradosh- Sandhya Krishna Paksha Trayodashi (13thLunar day after Full Moon) every month.
4. Maha Pradosh- Sandhya time of Krishna Paksha Trayodashi which falls on a Saturday.
5. Pralaya Pradosh- The time when the entire universe gets annihilated and gets merged with Lord Shiva.
