Building Social Harmony

Photo: Building Social Harmony

All must be encouraged to adopt spiritual practices based on ashtanga yoga as part of their daily life. The other aspect necessary for maintaining peace relates to overcoming blind faith, dogmatic traditions and superstitions. For this, we have to be ever ready to struggle against irrational odds and injustice in public life.
We want relief from dukha or sorrow; for this, a dual approach needs to be taken. The first is to guarantee purchasing capacity to all people to secure minimum essentials of life and the other approach is to take to the path of realising the supreme goal of life for attaining a permanent state of peace.

That which helps in attaining nivrtti or relief is called artha. But artha is only physical and gives temporary relief. Paramartha, the Supreme, brings everlasting freedom from dukha, whether physical, mental or spiritual. The Supreme can only be attained by sadhana or spiritual practice. Therefore, for maintaining peace, psychic equilibrium is necessary, and for maintaining this equilibrium, liberation from all kinds of dukha is necessary.

The superstition of heaven and hell and fear of God oppresses people and destroys their mental peace. We need to promote spiritual practices that are rationalistic. Systematic and scientific methods of spiritual practices leave no room for fear and superstitions. An ideal society will come into being only when there is unity, social security and peace.
