Hindu devotees across the world celebrate Maha Shivaratri

Devotees took out colorful processions across India to mark the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivaratri on Sunday.

The Shivaratri is dedicated to the Lord Shiva, one of the main deities of the Hindu trinity.
On this occasion, devout Hindus paid their obeisance to Lord Shiva, who is also regarded as the God of destruction of evil.
The holy city of Allahabad on the banks of River Ganga and Yamuna in northern state of Uttar Pradesh witnessed a long colourful 'Shiv Bharat'.
Maha Shivaratri was celebrated in almost all the temples and other spiritual and cultural institutions.
However, the mega idol of Lord Shiva on the Old Airport Road of Bangalore in southern India's Karnataka turned out to be a great crowd puller.
Devotees numbering over thousands visited this open air temple to offer their prayers.
Earlier in the day, at dawn, people took ritualistic baths in the rivers across India, offered special prayers in the temples and presented offerings before the lord.
According to the Panchang (Hindu almanac), Maha Shivaratri (Night of Lord Shiva) is observed on the 13th night and 14th day of 'Krishna Paksha' (New Moon phase) every year in the month of 'Phalguna or Maagh'.
According to Hinduism the five foods of immortality - milk, clarified butter, curd, honey and sugar are placed before the Shiva Lingam.
Dhatura fruit and flower, though poisonous, are believed to be sacred to Lord Shiva and thus offered to him.
Meanwhile Hindu devotees in Sri Lanka were awarded the rare opportunity to pay homage to the replicas of twelve Shiva Kovils that was brought down from India.
The exhibition was organized by the Sri Lanka Brahma Kumari Raja Yoga centre in Kotahena and n Batticaloa.
