How do we distinguish a true guru from a false one?

I was asked an interesting question recently.

How do we distinguish a true guru from a false one?

Here are SOME of the most important pointers that can help.

1. A false guru will keep you dependent on him. A true guru guides you to create your own journey and discover on your own

2. A false guru pushes forth superstition and magic. A true guru reminds you that the entire universe on its own is one beautiful miracle.

3. A false guru imposes rules and discourages questioning. A true guru presents you with advice on possible consequences, and leaves you to discover and decide for yourself.

4. If there is a question for which they do not have an answer, a false guru will say "you are just a mere person seeking a question to the knowledge that is beyond your comprehension". A true guru will admit that he too is seeking the answer to the same question, and will go through the journey of searching the answer together.

5. A false guru focuses on creating an unreachable, celebrity like image. A true guru oftentimes goes unnoticed.

6. A false guru promotes blind faith. A true guru encourages people to question.
