Lord Shiva, the transcendent, Lord Shiva, the immanent.

Photo: Lord Shiva, the transcendent, Lord Shiva, the immanent.

Pictorial depictions of the Hindu Gods, seated with one foot in the air, and the other on the ground, are a rich spiritual symbolism. They mean simply to convey, that God is both transcendent (in the air), as well as immanent (on the ground). A yogi sitting in this posture reflects lordship over both. The foot on the ground, therefore is of great importance, signifying a deep respect for the manifest world.
