After the war of Lanka, Lord Rama was advised to perform Prayaschitta, Atonement for killing a Brahmana. Lord Rama had killed a Brahmana which according to Puranas is a grave sin. Ravana was a Brahmana, a highly accomplished scholar. He is described as great Shiva Bhakta. In killing him Lord Rama incurred three sins ; killing a Brahman, killing a Great scholar and killing a great devotee. To get rid of Brahmanahatya, Lord Rama was advised to install a Shivalingam at Rameshwaram and worship Lord Shiva to absolve himself of his sins.
Lord Hanuman was asked to bring Shivalingam from Kailash. But it was delayed and Maa Sita made Shivalingam out of sand. Pooja was performed at the stipulated time as the auspicious Muhuratha was about to end. Meanwhile Hanuman ji returned from Kailash but was highly disappointed that all his efforts proved futile. As per Skanda Purana & Linga Purana, Lord Hanuman tried to uproot the lingam made out of sand with his tail, but in vain. Lord Rama pacified Hanuman and installed the Shivalingam brought by him to the left of Ramalingam. Rama ordered that all worship be first performed to this Shivalingam, known as kashilingam or vishwanathalingam.
It's also mentioned in some scriptures that Lord Rama suggested to Hanuman that he seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva and suggested that Lord Hanuman visit Thirukurungaval and worship Lord Shiva there to get back his tail. Hence the place has acquired its name, Tirukurunkaval (Place where Lord Shiva was worshipped by a monkey-faced God). It is one of the few Lord Shiva temples in the world, with a shrine of Lord Hanuman facing Lord Shiva.
As per Shiva Purana , Rama worshipped Shiva before going to war in Lanka. He prayed Lord Shiva to bless him to win the war and vanquish Ravana. Lord Shiva blessed accordingly. Rama also prayed to Lord Shiva to reside eternally at Rameshwaram so that entire mankind should benefit from it. 🌀
Jai Shri Ram ~ Jai Rudra Ke Roop Hanuman ~ Shubh Ratri! 💟🙏💟
