Abhishek is the process of bathing the deity.

According to Shiv Aagam (Poojaa rules) Abhishekam is considered as one part of the Shodashopachaar Pooja. Lord Shiva is pleased by the process of bathing. If you pour even a drop of water on the shivling, you will get the blessings of Shiva. Since Shiva is widely worshiped in the form of the Shivling, One should perform the abhishek to get the blessings of Shiva.

In Shiva temples, a pot made up of copper or brass with a hole in the centre is kept hanging over the Shivling, and water is falling on it throughout the day and night. Shiva drank the poison that emanated during the churning of the ocean and wore the Ganga and the crescent moon to cool His head. So constant Abhishek is done to cool his head.

Pouring water, milk, ghee, curd, honey, Panchamrita is Abhishek. All you need to do is to take and mix all the ingredients in a large bowl. Offer the mixture to the Shivling. Mantras are chanted and Shiva is propitiated by Abhishek.

Milk signifies purity and piousness.
Honey is for sweetness.
Ghee is for victory.
Sugar is for happiness.
Curd is for prosperity and progeny.

Abhishek literally means “to cleanse.” Before starting the ritual, a devotee washes his hands and pours water over the shivling. However, this practice is not to cleanse the Shivling, as God doesn’t need any cleansing. He is the purest, but it is an implication of cleaning oneself.
