People pray to God of their choice and so praying lord Rama or lord Hanuman may not make any difference. Whom I trust for whatever reason helps in strengthening the trust in self which is the prime mover.
There can be another reason for seeking blessing to a sevak of lord who can be easy approachable.
It is believed that Rama always lives with Hauman. Where devotion (bhakti) of Rama is being done Hanuman is present and where Hanuman is being worshipped lord Rama is present.
Worshipping a sevak Hanuman to get blessing from Rama is also showing gratitude to dissolve any pride in self.
Rama incarnated where he removed the evil force and acted as human where HE needed more than excellent warrior but intelligent to deal with any situation acting as savior and found in HANUMAN.
So powerful Hanuman even came in Mahabharat to reduce the ego of Bhima.
