Navaratri begins, Ahmedabad swirls into shortened 8-day revelry
Over 100 small and big venues over and above society-level and street garbas are ready for enthusiasts of all ages with innovative themes, celebrities and prizes worth lakhs on offer.

AHMEDABAD: The city is ready to become one big dance floor as Navratri begins on Thursday. This season however the festival of nine nights has been curtailed by a day—there will be only eights nights of dancing as ashtmi and navmi—the eighth and ninth day are on the same day according to the Hindu calendar.

Over 100 small and big venues over and above society-level and street garbas are ready for enthusiasts of all ages with innovative themes, celebrities and prizes worth lakhs on offer. Given the popularity of the festival, most venues will have garbas on Dusshera, October 3, as well.

Like every year, TOI-Shanku will hold garbas at Karnavati Club with glittering attractions and cash prizes for each day. "Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif are expected to come to our garba to promote their film. Beside celebrities, we will also have adventure rides at the venue and prizes worth lakhs for the best dancers. Last year, we had put up a balloon ride for couples," said Manoj Chaudhary of Shanku Entertainment.

Many venues will have garbas on various themes throughout Navratri. "Last year, our theme was 'Being Human' and this year it will be 'Raas Leela', a mix of cultural as well as pop music," said Arvind Pandey of an event management company organizing a garba at Rajpath Club.

Some clubs and organizers are keeping celebrations limited to 2-3 days as weekends and the final days of the festival attract the biggest crowds. "We will be having garbas on October 1 and 2. We believe crowds will pick up in the last few days which will give us a boost," said Alpesh Parikh, MD, Gulmohar Greens.

"It's good that Navratri this year begins on a Thursday so we can expect good crowds over the weekend. Though Amdavadis are charged up from the first day itself," said singer Devang Patel.

Hundreds of CCTVs as well as bouncers and women guards, will keep a watch at garba venues. "We will also have around 60 CCTVs, including 32 at the garba ground and 25 in the parking lot. Also, 75-80 bouncers along with women guards will be deployed to check unwanted elements," added Chaudhary.  -timesofindia
