NavaDurga, which literally means Nine forms of Goddess Durga, the manifestation of Parvati in nine different forms. Adi-Shakti, Sati manifested herself into nine forms in process of penance to win Shiva. The Navartri Worship was started by Her. Sati a personification of the Supreme Power of The Universe. As She was in love with Lord Shiva, she abandoned luxurious life of palaces and retired to a forest, to do the penance and worship Shiva. During this process she manifested in nine different forms. Each of the nine manifestation of Sati-Durga is worshipped with full devotion during Navarātri. Shailaputri, Daughter of the Himalayas. Brahmachariṇi, One who observes the state of celibacy doing penance. Chandraghaṇṭa, One who bears the moon in her necklace. Kusmaṇḍa, creator of the universe. Skanda-Mata, Karttikeya, born out of her powers. Katyayana, The daughter of sage Katyayana, who incarnated to help the Devas. Kalaratri, black as night, destroyer of Kali. Mahagauri, the wife of Lord Shiva, doing great penance. Siddhidatri, Provider of Siddhis, giver of mystic powers.
