How The Sacred Within Life Nourishes Us

How The Sacred Within Life Nourishes Us :

The most pressing issue today is environmental crisis, which concerns the future and well-being of our planet. Our increasing addiction to consumerism and our continued reliance on fossil fuels is creating an ‘ecocide’ that is destroying the living fabric of the earth.

Reflecting this outer crisis is an inner, spiritual disaster, all the more pressing because it is unreported and unacknowledged. Our soulless materialistic culture not only destroys our outer environment, but also the inner world of the sacred. Instead, our attitude and acts of exploitation have desecrated what was once holy, in the same way that the continued pollution of the Ganga desecrates this sacred river. We are left now with an inner wasteland that no longer nourishes our soul; that no longer gives sacred meaning to our daily life.

At its deepest level, this planet has the potential to give meaning and purpose to our souls as well as nourish our bodies. This has always been understood by traditional cultures that were rooted in the sacred. But as our present civilisation swamps us with information, the central knowledge of how our souls are nourished is missing. We do not understand how this spiritual substance of life, this spirit within matter, gives meaning to our everyday existence - how the sacred within life nourishes us.
