Mangala Gauri Pooja Description

One need not be very strict and can be flexible in observing the pooja. It varies from region to region as culture too changes. What is required is complete devotion while performing the pooja. A small and simple prayer with offerings of available fruits and lighting lamp is more than sufficient to observe the pooja.

What you need for the Pooja?

» Goddess Gauri’s image or idol (Goddess Parvati) or five pyramid shapes made from turmeric powder.
» Rice
» Cotton or flower garland
» Jaggery
» Coconut broken into two halves
» Red flowers
» Cloth folded like pyramid
» Usual fruits (locally available)
» Kalasam
» Betel leaves
» Unhusked wheat
» Silver tumbler
» Water

Preparation

» Neatly clean and dust the whole house and more particularly the pooja room.
» Tie mango leaf at the entrance of the house and at the entrance of the pooja room.
» Keep all the pooja items ready.
» Have Naivedyam menu to offer the Goddess and prepare and keep it ready.

How to do the Pooja?

» Pour Rice in a round or oval shaped tray or plate and make it as a bed.
» Place the Kalasam on the bed made of rice.
» Fill the Kalasam with water (Half filled).
» Decorate the neck of the Kalasam with betel leaves or mango leaves, usually five in number.
»  With the unhusked (whole wheat i.e along with the husk) wheat, fill the silver tumbler and place it to the right of the Kalasam.
» Using a cloth, fold it to appear like a pyramid and place it at the back of Kalasam.
» Break one coconut and place each half on the sides of the Kalasam.
» Fill the Kalasam tray with turmeric, flowers, kumkum, sandalwood and other Pooja items.
» Place Betel nuts and betel leaves (8 in number) on the tray.
» Place a large piece of jaggery (the four corner one) in front of the kalasam.
» Place five pyramid shape made from turmeric powder on the four corners of the jaggery and one in center.
» You can also use Goddess Gowri’s idol instead of jaggery.
» Decorate the turmeric pyramid or idol or picture of Goddess Gowri with turmeric, kumkum and flowers.
» You can also put a garland made from cotton thread or flowers on the pyramid or idol.

The Pooja Begins

» Lit the lamps.
» Offer flowers.
» Pray the deity by lighting incense.
» Offer fruits
» Offer prasadam that was cooked.
» Chant known mantra on Goddess Gouri and Meditate for few minutes. Ask for a fortune Read or listen to the story associated with Mangala Gowri.
» Take away the prasadam or fruits and share it with family members and friends.

In some regions: Women hold the dosa ladle on the lamp lit for the Mangala Gowri pooja. The black colored substance that appears is collected. Cold ghee is added to this and is applied on the eyes.
