Shri Ganesha is Everywhere. Master of intellect and wisdom, Shri Ganesha is revered as the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts, sciences, letters, and learning. He is God of the beginnings.
Everywhere we look, we find examples of learning across religious and cultural boundaries.
In Singapore, Ganesha statue sits within many temples, worshipped alongside an earth god by the name of Datuk Kong as well as the Chinese deity Tua Pek Kong.
In Thailand, Lord Ganesha is known as Phra Phikanet or Phra Phikanesuan. The Thai people believe the deity to be the bringer of fortune and success, as well as a god who can support them to overcome their trials in life.
In Myanmar, Lord Ganesha is worshipped as Maha-Peinne or the Great Bliss. He is known to the people mainly as the Lord who removes obstacles.
In Indonesia, Lord Ganesha is traditionally known as the god of learning, wisdom and knowledge. The fact that Lord Ganesha was seen as an educational symbol also explains why there is a visual image of him on Indonesia’s 20,000 rupiah note. Education is supposed to be the main theme of the note with the back of the note showing a picture of typical classroom activity in Indonesia and the front showing a picture of Ki Hajar Dewantara whose birth date is celebrated as National Education Day in Indonesia.
In Cambodia, Lord Ganesha is known as Prah Kenes and his representations can be distinguished by certain characteristic features such as his cross-legged posture, two hands, a straight trunk that is curled down at the end and sometimes, upturned. Unlike how he is represented in several other regions as having a pot-belly, we will not see him with that trait as Prah Kenes.
In Japan, Lord Ganesha is worshipped as Kangi-ten, Sho-ten, Ganabachi, Nandikeshvara & Binayaka-ten. His worship was brought to Japan by the early Buddhists. Also called the Deva of Bliss, Kangi-ten is called upon by the people for enlightenment and worldly gains.
Hinduism made its entrance into France because of Vivekananda, who was an Indian religious reformer who strove to make Hinduism and yoga accessible to non-Hindus. Sri Lankans account for the majority of Hindu people in France and every year, a festival to honor Lord Ganesha known as Ganesh Chaturthi, is celebrated grandly with a chariot procession at Sri Manicka Vinayakar Temple in Paris.
In America, Lord Ganesha is commonly known as the lord of beginnings and the remover of obstacles. The Hindu population has reached 2.23 million in America – an increase of about one million or 85.8 per cent since 2007, making the Hinduism the fourth-largest faith there as reported in the Times of India this year. 🕉🐘🕉
