A person gets good results by fasting and worshipping Shiva and Narayana in the kartik month, which is considered equivalent to visiting all the pilgrimages.
Taking bath in the holy Ganges water, during the Kartik month is considered to be as auspicious as taking bath in the Ganga 1000 times, 100 times magh bath, crore times in Narmada River during Vaishakh month. The result that one gets by taking bath in the Prayag in Kumbh is equal to taking bath in one holy river during the Kartik month.
One should eat meal only one time and non-veg should strictly be avoided. The person who eats non-vegetarian food in this month gets the life of a demon.
Those who follow all the rules and regulations as mentioned in the scriptures gets relief from all sins. Lightning a lamp in temples before the idols of Shri Vishnu/Krishna, Lord Shiva, goddess Chandi, Sun god and other gods and goddess is considered very auspicious in this month.
The most important aspect of Kartik Mass is hearing or reading Kartik Purana. It is called as Karthika vratham. It normally includes the following rules:
Waking up early in Brahmi muhartham (4.00A.M)
Taking bath in Ganges or remembering Ganga
Vishnu puja
Lighting Akasha deepam on sunrise and sun set
Understanding Karthika Purana
One should not eat Onion, garlic and non-veg food for the whole month.
Should not use seasame oil for anything except for lighting diyas
Must take meal only once per day for the 30 days, or at least, we must follow this on auspicious days like Mondays, kartik poornima, and other auspicious days of Kartik month.
