There are many legends associated with the Sudarshana Chakra of Shri Vishnu. The Chakra finds mention in the Rigveda as a symbol of Shri Vishnu, and as the wheel of time in Puranas. In the Mahabharata, Lord Krishna uses it as a weapon.
As per Valmiki Ramayana, Shri Vishnu killed a demon named Hayagriva on top of mountain named Chakravana constructed by Vishvakarma and took away Chakra i.e. Sudarshana Chakra from him.
As per the Shiva Purana, Shri Vishnu asked Lord Shiva for a weapon to kill the Asuras and save the life of Devas. Shri Vishnu also offered 1008 lotus to Shiva. To test Vishnu, Mahadeva hide one lotus flower. Vishnu found one lotus was missing and without hesitation he offered one of his own eyes and offered it to Shiva. Lord Shiva pleased with his devotion, gave him the Chakra which is called “Sudharshana”. This is also the reason for Vishnu being called as Lotus eyed.
As per some puranas, the Sudarshana Chakra was made by the architect of gods, Vishwakarma. Vishwakarma's daughter Sanjana was married to Surya, the sun god. Due to the Sun's blazing light and heat, she could not go near the Sun. She complained to her father about this. Vishvakarma made the sun shine less so that his daughter could hug the Sun. The left over Sun "dust" was collected by Vishvakarma and made into three divine objects, (1) the aerial vehicle Pushpaka Vimana, (2) Trishula of Shiva, (3) Sudarshana Chakra of Shri Vishnu. The Chakra is described to have 10 million spikes in two rows moving in opposite directions to give it a serrated edge.
In Shiva purana, Sudarshana Chakra was used by Shri Vishnu to cut the corpse of Sati, the consort of Shiva into 51 pieces after she gave up her life by throwing herself in a yagna (fire sacrifice) of her father Daksha. Shiva, in grief, carried around her lifeless body and was inconsolable. The 51 parts of the goddess' body were then tossed about in different parts of the Indian subcontinent and became "Shakti Peethas".
There are several other stories associated with the Sudarshana Chakra, such as that of Lord Vishnu granting King Ambarisha the boon of Sudarshana Chakra in form of prosperity, peace and security to his kingdom. Sudarshana Chakra was also used to cut the head of Rahu and cut the celestial mountain Mandra Parvat during the Samudra Manthan. In one version, Jalandharasura, a rakshasa, landed in Kailasa to conquer it. Lord Shiva drew a Chakra by his big toe on the ground and asked the asura to lift it. Jalandhara lifted the chakra and when it reached near his neck it severed his head.! ๐ŸŒ€๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ•‰๐Ÿš๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป
