Contrary to perception, you cannot embark on a meditation programme spontaneously. Before you begin meditation, it is advisable to consult a doctor. Besides getting an okay from your doctor, it is important to make some lifestyle changes to get into the meditative mode.

Exercise

These include introducing some form of exercise in your daily life. Perform at least half an hour of an aerobic exercise, like walking, jogging, cycling, etc. followed by half an hour of another form of exercise like yoga, stretching, strengthening and resistance training exercises. These together will not only strengthen your mind and body but also provide clarity and open up channels necessary for meditation.

Diet

When it comes to your diet, eat a light, home-cooked, organic, nutritious, low-salt and low-fat, lacto-vegetarian diet. In case you suffer from high blood pressure, heart disease or high cholesterol, limit your calories from fat to around 10 per cent of your total calories, avoiding saturated and hydrogenated fats.

Sleep

Try to get adequate sleep at night, which should be around 6-8 hours’ duration and also maintain proper hygiene. Also avoid too much exposure to electronic gadgets like mobiles, TV, internet, etc. and lead an honest and simple life.

Get started

Now you are ready to begin your meditation programme. You can start with half an hour of meditation each day and increase the timing, depending upon your comfort level. In case you feel discomfort or uneasiness at any time, discontinue the same.
Also, never force your mind to attain any state; it should be done only through auto suggestions and convincing your mind about the truth.
