This strange reversal and abandonment of the ego’s efforts brings about the fulfillment of the self through non-seeking, while the direct seeking of pleasure proves to be the action which frustrates pleasure.

We are at first frightened at surrender because we imagine it to be giving something up when all we are giving up is our own self-frustrating activity. Of course, the above words capture this paradox with an elegant economy of language, and yet the principle, the truth on which it is based, needs to be decoded from its deceptively simple expression.
