According to ancient Hindu mythology, the Samudra Manthan carried out by the Gods and demons, which was a plan of Lord Vishnu to let the Gods have the syrup of immortality, is very popular among people. However, most people only know about it as a story. In reality, there are a lot of lessons that can be learnt from this famous episode.
Even today, many religious traditions are associated or revolve around this incident. Be it Maha Lakshmi Puja or the overflowing crowd of people at Mahakumbh, all are realted to this old belief when precious gems and treasure had emerged from the depths of the sea.
Surprisingly, a very few people know about the incident when Lord Vishnu got into the disguise of Mohini, a beautiful lady and not just attracted Gods and demons, but even Lord Shiva.

According to Vishnu Purana, sage Durvasa was returning from Vaikunth Lok. Seeing Indra Dev sitting on Eravat on his way, he thought of him to be Trilokpati and offered him a raosary made of lotus flowers. However, Indra lost his cool and in anger threw that roasary on Eravat, which was then crushed by an elephant.
Sage Durvasa thought of this action to be an insult of Goddess Laksmhi and therefore cursed Indra to be Shriheen. According to an old story, Indra Dev had gone poor after the curse. All his ego went into the sea and the demons captured the sea.
To find the kingdom of heaven again, Lord Vishnu suggested Gods for Samudra Manthan and told them that the help of demons for this will be a must. Indra Dev then arranged for the Manthan.
To begin the Manthan, Gods and demons used the sea serpent and Mandrachal mountain. Lord Vishnu took a form of tortoise and saved Mandrachal. This incident is actually related to our life where this world in the sea, Mandrachal is like our heart, which needs Gods support to live peacefully and happly with others and uses that serpent in order to gain world knowledge.

The first thing that came out of the sea was fire and poison. Every God and demon refused to take it and to end their confusion and Manthan to continue; Lord Shiva consumed the poison and held it in his throat, which is why, Neel Kanth.
This incident is also connected to our lives, just like the way Lord Shiva solved Gods and demons problem of poison by consuming it, he helps his devotees and end their problems.
Kamdhenu
Kamdhenu’s biggest quality was to provide essential ingredients for the yagya. Essential things that were required to be sent to Brahmalok like milk, curds, ghee were donated to saints. This incident teaches that the money earned from hard work should first be used for the needy and then for oneself.
Uchhay Shravah Horse
A shining white colour, stong horse emerged from the sea during Manthan whose name was Uchhay Shravah. This went to the demons and Daityaraj Bali took it.
Aeraavat Elephant
A strange elephant with 4 teeth came out from the sea along with 64 other white elephants. He was Aeravat and was received by Devraj. Actually the eyes of an elephant are very tiny and it is a symbol of sharp sight and deep thinking in real life.
Kautubh Mani
The most attractive of all gems, Kautubh shines like a sun and could lighten up the entire Trilok. Gods received this gem.
Kalpvrikhsa
Pride of heaven, Kalpvriksha (tree) is believed to fulfill people’s desire.
Apsara
Bbeautiful ladies with perfect bodies and amazing walk in which Rambha was the main one went to the Gods.
Mahalakshmi
The Goddess came out of the sea and everybody got attracted and started trying their best to take her on their side. However, she put the garland in Lord Vishnu’s neck.
Moon
Moon also came out from the sea during Manthan.
Alcohol
Madira Devi came out of the sea and demons received it.
