Gita

Photo: Gita

Alpa (अल्प) and mama (महा), two Sanskrit words meaning small and big.

The ego is alpa (अल्प) - small, and the Atman (आत्मा) or the Self is mama (महा) - big. When we are alpa- small, we are prone to crime, all delinquency come from this self which is alpa, not knowing one's mahan (महान) or immense nature.

Gandhiji was called mahatma (महात्मा), that is mahan (महान) Atman (आत्मा), or Great Soul. Everyone can be a mahatma (महात्मा). THAT IS OUR BIRTHRIGHT. So, the sage says: 'I have realized that Infinite Self behind this finite self.' Vedahametam Purusham Mahantam (वेदाहमेतं पुरुषं महान्तं). Aditya varam (आदित्य वर्णं), 'glorious or luminous like the sun', tamasah parastat (तमसः परस्तात), 'beyond all darkness and delusion'.

That is the Truth I have realized. But he (the sage) did not say, 'you only believe me to be saved'. He said: tam eva viditva atimrityumeti (तमेव विदित्व अतिमृत्युमेति), 'you also realize this Truth to become immortal', because IT IS YOUR OWN BIRTHRIGHT. You have not to beg and borrow this TRUTH from somebody else.

NEVER WILL YOU FIND IN THE WORLD'S LITERATURE SUCH AUTHENTIC UTTERANCE OF HUMAN GREATNESS AND GLORY AS IN THE UPANISHADS (उपनिषद्). IT IS SAID WITH SUCH CONVICTION TO THE LISTENER.

Having said this, the sage added nanyah pantha vidyate ayanya (नान्यः पन्था विद्यतेSयनाय), there is no other way,
there is no other way to freedom'. See the language: nanyah pantha vidyate (नान्यः पन्था विद्यते), 'there is no other way'. Realizing this truth even a little, even a glimpse of it, can change your life. Today, I am a corrupt individual. I get a glimpse of this truth through some person or other; my life becomes changed into a honest person inspired with an attitude of service to humanity.
