Lord Krishna Janmashtami celebrated with fervour in Madurai

MADURAI: Lord Shri Krishna's Janmashtami was celebrated with traditional gaiety and religious fervour in Madurai on Wednesday.

Though the festival is celebrated mainly by the Vaishnavites more than Shaivites of the people who follow Hinduism religion, this year marked the fest celebration by people from different walk of life, who were queuing up outside the temples. The statue of Lord Krishna as a child with a pot of ghee in his hand was beautifully decorated. Statue of Rama and Vishnu in the temples were also dressed up for the festival. Devotees offered ghee to the deities in the temple. Special prasadam of kheer and laddus was also distributed to the devotees.

Huge crowd thronged the Iskcon temple in Madurai, where various arrangements were made for the special occasion. Floral arrangements and special prayer sessions were conducted. Fancy dress competitions for children were held in many temples and schools to celebrate Janmashtami.

Houses were decorated with 'kolams', representing tiny feet of Lord Krishna from the houses' entrance to the shrine room. "We believe that we are invoking Lord Krishna into our homes on his Janmashtami by drawing these tiny feet, which we don't usually do on any other day," said Pankajam of Ellis Nagar, who was decorating her home for the festival to be held in the evening.

In Dindigul, the idol of Lord Rama in the famous Sri Anjai Varadha Anjeneya temple in Chinnalapatti was given a makeover to resemble Lord Krishna, and special poojas were performed for the occasion. Shops sold sweets -- like laddus, seedai and murukku, which are offered to the deity on the occasion. Some of the shops also sold ghee at a discounted price.
