Mamleshwar Temple

Mamleshwar Temple (19 photos)

The Mamleshwar temple was built in the 10th century on the south bank of river Narmada. It is a small complex of temples. In its heyday it must have had two large shrines and a number of smaller ones, but now-a-days, only one large shrine seems to be open to worshippers. There are also some interesting smaller carvings on the door-posts of a minor shrine.

The sacred island of Omkareshwar lies across the river. When you reach the island you are expected to do the parikrama, or at least as much of it as you can.

The Koti Teerth's main ghat is a raised platform which holds two, single-celled, red temples. One of the great Hindu philosopher and missionary: Adi Shankaracharya. While moving up the stairs from these small temples towards the main one, the visitors also come to a shrine of a five-headed Ganesh. One of the most benign and loved deities in the Hindu pantheon.
