"This body that we are so proud of and we are so much attached to will become a heap of ash one day!" Yes, body is perishable, death can come anytime and the body will be reduced to ashes. That ash which is dear to Lord Mahakal. Cemetery is the favourite place of Lord Mahakal and ash that he applies on his body. Shaivites apply ash or vibhuti on their foreheads with great reverence just to remind themselves that this Life is transient. The body and ego which gives one sense of individuality will not be around one day. What will be left after cremation is ashes. be mindful and live a ethical life conducive to spiritual progress. Ash indicates the transience of the beings and the Permanence of the Supreme that smears in this ash. In Varanasi, Vishveshwara is always worshiped by Chitabhasma. When the three demons of impurities (tripura) were burnt down by the mere smile of the God, the ash that remained got settled on the Lord, Who danced there. Thus the tripurari was smeared in the Ash that came out of burning out of the three impurities. When Kaamdeva tried to fire his arrows on Shiva he was burnt by the Lord into a heap of ash. The unruffled Lord appeared decorated with that ash. At the times when everything reduces unto It, Only Shiva wearing that ash exists forever.!!
