Divine Frolic And Fun

Divine Frolic And Fun

With Vaishnavism gaining popularity, Radha as a symbol of Prakriti or Nature, and Krishna as the ultimate reality, became the centre of attraction of devotees who saw in their union the creation of the cosmos. In human form, their lila was replicated at spring festivals when they were viewed as the primordial entities of Prakriti and Purusha. The idols of Radha and Krishna were placed in a beautifully decorated swing — hence the spring festival is also known as Dola Yatra or Dola Govind. One more ritual added to the frolic and fun associated with the season of bloom.

Colour has always been an integral part of the spring festival. Smearing of colours on one while singing and dancing, added an interesting dimension to the atmosphere of gay abandon. The colour red symbolises fertility, the bonfire is in remembrance of Holika’s sacrifice; and the erotic songs are carried over from the Kamadev Mahotsav.
