I remember going out one morning and seeing little drops of dew on the pine needles. The sunlight was shining on them, creating a lovely iridescence. And with my mind I could appreciate how beautiful it all was, but with my heart there was a veil between myself and the experience.

And with my mind I could appreciate how beautiful it all was, but with my heart there was a veil between myself and the experience. I couldn’t completely feel it. I couldn’t completely enter into it. My mind could define it as beauty and my heart could accept that “Yes, it’s beautiful, but what’s next?”
We Have To Change Something In Ourselves :

My ability to experience, and my ability to be satisfied, felt like a motor that was running on one cylinder. I could reason very well, because perhaps I had a quick mind, but my heart couldn’t enter into that process of reasoning.

There was a lack, and I found that I couldn’t change by merely being among different people.

This ability to draw on the capacity of heart and mind together is something very important.

Sooner or later, we come to realize that what we have to change is not our environment, our possessions or circumstances, but something inside ourselves. Until we have changed that part, nothing outside us is going to satisfy us. And once we have changed, everything outside us can, in one way or another, be a cause for satisfaction.

We read stories of people who have been in the most abysmal situations, such as being tortured, thrown in a dungeon, suffering terrible deprivation, and yet we find among these people some who have achieved great joy.
